Removal of the Deadline in Congress:

 

H.J.Res.79 - Removing the deadline for the ratification of the equal rights amendment: This piece of legislation was introduced by Rep. Jackie Speier. The summary states: “This joint resolution eliminates the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, which prohibits discrimination based on sex. The amendment was proposed to the states in House Joint Resolution 208 of the 92nd Congress, as agreed to in the Senate on March 22, 1972. The amendment shall be part of the Constitution whenever ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the states.” Click here to see the resolution. 

 

S.J.Res.6 - A joint resolution removing the deadline for the ratification of the equal rights amendment: This piece of legislation was introduced by Senator Ben Cardin. The summary states: “This joint resolution eliminates the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, which prohibits discrimination based on sex. The amendment was proposed to the states in House Joint Resolution 208 of the 92nd Congress, as agreed to in the Senate on March 22, 1972. H.J Res. 79 is expected to easily pass the House of Representatives. The focus is to maximize bipartisan support on the resolution. The area of uncertainty is in the Senate with S.J Res. 6. Given Republican control of the Senate, it will be difficult to get the resolution to a floor vote as well as secure the votes to ensure it passes.
